🔄 Language: We expect that most presentations and discussions will be held in German

Join us for an expert workshop exploring how bio-based solid carbon, such as biochar and hydrochar, can support cities and regions in reaching net zero emissions by 2040. Together, we’ll outline how to prioritize biomass usage within cascading use principles to maximize climate impact at the local level.

Planned Program
In this workshop, we aim to bring together current knowledge, connect relevant stakeholders, and define the next steps to unlock the potential of bio-based solid carbon removals as soon as possible. You can look forward to varied inputs and a fruitful exchange.

  • Introductions
  • 7 Short Inputs:
    • Slurry treatment in agriculture as a CO₂ sink – Alois Philipp, C-Resource
    • Opportunities for BSCR from the perspective of Biomasse Suisse – Urs Baier, Biomasse Suisse
    • Naturbasierter Klimaschutz : Marktpotenzial und Handlungsempfehlungen für Deutschland – Charlotte Streck, Climate Focus
    • Wood between energy use and Carbon storage – Laurent Audergon, Holzenergie Schweiz
    • New ETH model results on the potential of BSCR – Gianfranco Guidati, ETHZ
    • Hydrochar as a climate measure? Stakeholder perspectives on storage in Switzerland – Flurin Pfalzgraf / Christina Marchand, ZHAW
    • Algae-based biomass for BSCR – Oliver Kost, Startup Arrhenius
  • Breakout Sessions addressing the guiding question:
What is the relevance, potential, and time horizon of using biomass as a CO₂ sink for achieving net zero?
  • Collection of results
  • Outlook and next steps

We are very much looking forward to advancing climate protection together with you through solid carbon removals. Please accept this invitation if you would like to join, and feel free to forward it to other interested experts.

📌 Who we are:
The Taskforce on Bio-based Solid Carbon Removals (TF BSCR) emerged from the working group “Fester Kohlenstoff” within the DeCIRRA flagship project. It brings together experts from research, industry, and associations. The goal is to raise awareness about these methods, highlight their potential, and help shape the framework conditions needed for large-scale deployment.
